SEASONS

Fall (Late August to September)

Weather:

While it is usually still relatively warm, a change of weather can happen anytime especially in the Mountain passes. It is common to have rain at this time.

Wildlife:

Caribou & Grizzly are often spotted during the fall

Flora:

The fall colours will be in full form as the tundra transforms from green into a tapestry of red, yellow, and orange

Winter (October to March)

Weather:

Winter driving and freezing temperatures will be in full effect. 

Wildlife:

Fox, Rabbits, Moose, & Ptarmigan are often spotted foraging for food along the sides of the highway

Ice Road Crossings:

Ice Road crossings are accessible end of November until the end of April.

Spring (April to Early June)

Weather:

Although Spring will mean warmer temperatures and an increase in daily sunlight, the road will still be frozen and the ground covered in snow. Winter driving conditions may still apply, so please use caution.

Wildlife:

Fox, Rabbits, and Ptarmigan are often spotted foraging for food along the sides of the highway

 

Driving Tips:

There is often 3-4 weeks of thaw when ferries may not be available and the ice roads are also unavailable.

Summer (Mid June to Mid August)

 

Weather:

While Summer is the most popular time to travel the Dempster with long hours of continuous sunlight and generally warm temperatures, a change of weather can happen anytime especially in the Mountain passes. 

Wildlife:

Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Foxes, Wolves, and Ground Squirrels are the most common wildlife spotted during the summer season.

Flora:

The shrubs, small trees, lichens, and plants that grow along the highway will be lush and green at this time.

 

The ferry crossings are operational generally first week of June until the latter part of October.
